Pharmacies

In Luxembourg, a pharmacy is a pubic service managed by the State, which awards so-called concessions – in essence, a licence to operate a pharmacy – to qualified pharmacists. The setting up and transfer of pharmacies open to the pubic are regulated by law.

Alongside these pubic pharmacies, or ‘officines’, there are hospital pharmacies, which are not open to the pubic and which distribute medication within the hospital.

New pharmacies may be set up according to need, at local or regional level, based on authorisation from the Ministry of Health. The profession of pharmacist is controlled by the Pharmacy Division (Division de la Pharmacie) of the Health Directorate (Direction de la Santé).

Out-of-hours pharmacies

Pharmacies that are designated to be on call provide a 24-hour service, running from 8:00 until 8:00 the next day.
