HIV prevention: I 'prep' my dates

Take a tablet, not a risk!

World AIDS Day takes place every year on 1 December all around the world.

The Health Directorate (Direction de la santé), in collaboration with the Supervisory Committee for AIDS, Infectious Hepatitis and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (Comité de surveillance du SIDA, des hépatites infectieuses et des maladies sexuellement transmissibles) and the HIV-Berodung service of the Red Cross, have decided to focus their 2022 HIV prevention campaign on PrEP prevention treatment.

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is preventive treatment that involves taking medication to avoid become infected. It means that people who are not HIV-positive can avoid infection when having unprotected sex. This prevention strategy has been in place since 2016 and has been the subject of several studies, all of which have shown that if the treatment is taken correctly, the infection risk is minimal. In Luxembourg, PrEP is available on prescription issued by a specialist infectious disease doctor at the National Service for Infectious Diseases (Service national des maladies infectieuses) and is funded by the National Health Fund (Caisse nationale de santé - CNS).

A website on this treatment has been set up, where you can find everything you need to know: www.prep.lu.

Actions taken during the campaign

The following events will take place on 1 December:

  • Distribution of condoms in 2 different places in Luxembourg City: in the square in front of Luxembourg station and alongside the funicular railway linking Pfaffenthal and Kirchberg.

  • The DIMPS-Mobile HIV Testing unit will be next to Luxembourg station, offering free, rapid, anonymous testing for HIV.

  • 1 December will also be the last day to purchase the 'love baguette' in Namur shops in Luxembourg. For every love baguette purchased, EUR 1 will go to support the prevention activities of the HIV-Berodung service of the Red Cross.
